The scope of work for this project included the renovation and expansion of an existing, historic Victorian building in northwest Washington, DC. The existing 6,030 sq. ft. building was completely renovated, and 1,420 sq. ft. of space was added to accommodate the seventh and eighth grade class curriculum. Among the challenges of this project was the goal of keeping the historic character of the building, as well as upgrading the building to current life safety and accessibility codes. The program was composed of a library, administrative offices with a conference room, a common room, four classrooms, an art room, a music room, and a science lab.

This project called for the addition of 3,850 sq.ft. of classroom space, as well as the renovation of 7,800 sq. ft. of existing classroom areas, for the middle school (grades 6, 7, and 8) of this Bethesda campus. The program included 5 new classrooms, locker areas, a handicapped accessible restroom, teacher’s office, foyer and utility room. The building addition blends with the existing architecture through the use of a multiple gable scheme, with painted brick, timber frame porches, and a tower element.

Bach to Rock at Washingtonian Center is a unique business prototype for a contemporary music school appealing to children and young adults. The 3,600 square foot space is divided into ten small studios for private lessons, five band rooms for multi-instrument jam sessions, a performance room that seats 90 and a recording booth and recording studio for making music CD's. In order to improve sound quality within the space, walls were angled and two independent ceilings were installed throughout---both isolated from the structure. In addition, the design team worked closely with local graphics consultants to brand the exterior storefront and interior spaces with graphics and signage. Known affectionately as B2R, this is the first location in a chain of music schools across the Washington, DC area.

GTM Architects designed the prototype location for Jabberu, a dynamic company which offers kids foreign language instruction in a stimulating and fun environment. At Jabberu, native speakers teach children from 12 months to 10 years of age, activities-based classes in Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic and Italian. Jabberu also sells language learning products at their various stores.
The design concept of the first Jabberu site was to create a series of flexible, open classrooms which were defined by color and ceiling details rather than by walls. The bright hues of the company logo were used on accent walls, floor finishes and furniture. The flowing floor plan also reflects the dynamic and interactive nature of the learning process and enables limited space to be optimized for various activities.
The first location was so successful that Jabberu has since expanded to 3 locations in the DC Metro area.
